JW Pharmaceutical announced on the 11th that it conducted a campaign to raise awareness of the importance of anemia treatment in observance of ‘World Anemia Awareness Day.’

February 13th of every year is designated as ‘World Anemia Awareness Day,’ jointly established in 2022 by the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM) and the nonprofit organization Human Touch Media Foundation. This year, an event will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to raise awareness about anemia and iron deficiency and to emphasize the importance of preventive measures.

Through this campaign, JW Pharmaceutical distributed promotional materials accompanied by chocolates to employees working at the JW headquarters in Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, to convey the significance of ‘World Anemia Awareness Day’ and the importance of anemia treatment.

Anemia is a disease affecting more than 2 billion people worldwide. According to the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the prevalence of anemia among the domestic population aged 10 and older reaches 11.6%. In particular, over 80% of cases are classified as iron deficiency anemia. In elderly individuals, chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and inflammatory diseases can be underlying causes. Anemia may occur due to impaired function of cytokines, which are homeostatic regulators that maintain immune and cellular status, leading to poor absorption and transport of hematopoietic nutrients like iron.

Symptoms of anemia include fatigue, shortness of breath, lethargy, and palpitations. If left untreated, it can cause cold hands and feet, headaches, dizziness, vertigo, and memory decline. In severe cases, fingernails may become concave.

Moreover, untreated anemia can increase the risk of heart disease. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association in 2018, individuals whose hemoglobin levels were outside the normal range for two years showed an increased risk of death from acute myocardial infarction and cerebrovascular disease after 10 years.

Therefore, early detection and active management of anemia are crucial, and regular examinations and appropriate treatment are necessary. Iron deficiency anemia can be treated with oral iron supplements or intravenous iron injections.

JW Pharmaceutical plans to continue various activities to raise awareness of the importance of anemia treatment. A JW Pharmaceutical official stated, "JW Pharmaceutical supplies ‘Perinject (active ingredient ferric carboxymaltose)’ and is committed to improving the quality of life for patients suffering from iron deficiency-related diseases," adding, "We will continue to carry out various activities that can provide practical help to patients."

Perinject is a high-dose iron injection that can replenish up to 1000 mg of iron in as little as 15 minutes. This product is used to treat iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia in women at high risk, patients with chronic bleeding, as well as anemia caused by various surgeries and chemotherapy that result in bleeding. Since May of last year, it has been covered by health insurance, allowing various patients suffering from iron deficiency-related diseases to receive medical benefits.
