Gyeonggi Province Superintendent of Education Lim Tae-hee promised to establish verification measures during the teacher appointment process in relation to the horrific incident that occurred at an elementary school in Daejeon on the 10th.
On the 11th, Superintendent Lim Tae-hee posted on his social media (SNS), "An unimaginable horrific event occurred yesterday in Daejeon at a school, the place where students should be the safest," and expressed, "I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families who must be in great shock and sorrow."
He continued, "If someone has a serious mental illness, they should not stand in the classroom," and promised, "We will prepare measures to screen during the appointment stage, check for any issues during employment, and evaluate surrounding feedback to filter out such cases."
However, he added, "This incident is a special case," and urged, "I hope it will not be generalized and cause harm to the teachers who are working hard in schools."
Earlier, around 6 p.m. the previous day, first-grade student A and female teacher B were found stabbed in the audiovisual room on the second floor of an elementary school building in Gwanjeo-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. Student A was taken to a nearby hospital but passed away, and teacher B admitted to committing the crime. It was understood that teacher B, who held a full-time teacher position, had taken a leave of absence due to issues such as depression and returned to work at the end of last year.
