"People Power Party Faces Tough Road to Regaining Power...
Change Is Essential"
Kim Jong-in, former Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, stated that if an early presidential election becomes a reality, former Representative Han Dong-hoon should run, adding, "Han has little choice. Since he has entered politics, it is normal for him to have great ambitions and appear on the presidential stage."
On the 11th, Kim said on SBS Radio's 'Kim Tae-hyun's Political Show,' "Han has the greatest potential for expansion compared to any other candidate." He explained, "The fact that an early presidential election is held proves that the martial law was wrong and the impeachment was justified, so it is natural that the person who most actively opposed the martial law is in the most advantageous position."
Regarding Han's chances of passing the party primary, he said, "The voices opposing impeachment within the party are mainly from lawmakers, but not all party members agree with that," and added, "Since a majority of 63% chose Han at the party convention, I don't think that support base has disappeared."
Addressing criticism from hardline conservatives who call Han a 'traitor' for opposing martial law, Kim pointed out that it is a "wrong judgment." He said, "Just as President Yoon Seok-youl said, 'I am loyal not to individuals but to the country,' Han expressed his conviction against martial law to protect South Korea's democracy. Is that betrayal?"
Kim also said that it would be difficult for the People Power Party to recreate the government in an early presidential election. He stated, "Unless there is a groundbreaking change, it will be difficult to regain power," and added, "If we do not realistically recognize the situation and completely break away from what conservatism has aimed for so far, the possibility is slim." He continued, "The fact that an early presidential election is held inevitably gives the general public the perception that the Yoon Seok-youl administration is a complete failure," advising, "To bring about change, the Yoon administration must pursue goals that are completely different from what it has done so far."
