"Violation of Freedom of Expression... Suppression of Political Views"
"Remarks Intended to Urge Consideration of Public Opinion"
"Raising His Voice to Defend Liberal Democracy"
While Jeon Hangil, a public servant Korean history instructor, has been accused of inciting rebellion, the People Power Party has called the accusation "unjust" and urged for the case to be closed.
Joo Jinwoo, head of the People Power Party's legal advisory committee, announced in a notice delivered to reporters on the 10th, "We are submitting a legal opinion calling for the swift closure of the unjust incitement to rebellion case against instructor Jeon Hangil." He continued, "This accusation is an attempt to abuse the criminal justice system to infringe on freedom of expression and suppress others' political views, thereby limiting the space for public debate." He added, "We urge a prompt closure of the case without further proceedings to prevent this from becoming a case of infringement on citizens' fundamental rights."
He also stated, "'Sasehaeng,' or the Citizens' Action for Judicial Justice, is a civic group with a pro-Democratic Party stance," and claimed, "They have made an unjust accusation targeting instructor Jeon Hangil, who has criticized the Democratic Party's actions such as surveillance of citizens' KakaoTalk messages, censorship of public opinion polls, excessive use of impeachment, legislative overreach, unilateral handling of the budget, and suspicions of illegal investigations by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO)."
Additionally, the People Power Party defended Jeon, stating, "Anyone can see that instructor Jeon Hangil's remarks were intended to urge the Constitutional Court to consider public opinion, not to incite rebellion or promote violence." They further argued, "He is raising his voice against the Democratic Party's runaway actions, giving up a stable life and significant income to protect the liberal democratic system."
They also emphasized, "If investigative agencies mechanically proceed with criminal justice procedures such as summons or compulsory investigations simply because a complaint has been filed, ordinary citizens who are falsely accused may suffer from lengthy investigations and legal proceedings, resulting in the serious consequence of losing their daily lives."
Previously, on the 5th, Sasehaeng filed a complaint against Jeon on charges of inciting rebellion and defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act. In a press conference, they claimed, "Jeon has repeatedly engaged in unjust attacks against certain Constitutional Court justices and denied the legitimacy of the impeachment trial itself, thereby justifying public resistance and intrusion or violence against the Constitutional Court in the event that President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment is upheld."
