Donald Trump, President of the United States, stated in a Fox News recorded broadcast released on the 10th (local time) that "he will not allow Palestinians to return to the Gaza Strip."
In an interview recorded on the 9th (local time) and scheduled to air on the afternoon of the 10th with Fox News anchor Brett Baier, President Trump described his development plan for the Gaza Strip as a "real estate development for the future" and made this statement.
When asked, "Will Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have the right to return to Gaza?" President Trump replied, "No. They will not. Because they will have much better places to live (outside the Gaza Strip)."
This proposal was first announced last week when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the White House. After meeting with Netanyahu on the 4th, President Trump held a joint press conference where he expressed his intention to relocate Palestinians in the Gaza Strip to neighboring countries and stated, "The United States will take over Gaza," unveiling a plan to develop Gaza as a coastal resort city owned by the U.S.
President Trump said, "In other words, I am talking about building permanent residences for them (the Gaza residents)." The plan involves resettling more than 1.9 million Gaza residents in surrounding countries such as Egypt and Jordan, where they would live permanently.
White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt said in a briefing on the 5th, "The President promised the reconstruction of Gaza and the temporary relocation of the people there," leaving room for the residents' return after Gaza's development. However, on this day, President Trump effectively expressed a stance of 'no return.'
President Trump stated that he would create "beautiful communities (residential areas)" outside the Gaza Strip for its residents, adding, "It could be two places, or five to six places," and "We will build safe communities a little away from that dangerous place where they live."
He also said, "I think the potential of Gaza is incredibly great," adding, "Gaza could become the Riviera of the Middle East." The Riviera refers to the Mediterranean coastal area stretching from Cannes in France to La Spezia in Italy, known worldwide as a tourist and resort destination.
President Trump then said, "For the time being, I will own this (Gaza)," and "I will think of it as a 'real estate development for the future,'" adding, "It will be beautiful land, and we will not spend a lot of money."
Meanwhile, part of the interview was broadcast before the Super Bowl game on Sunday (local time), and additional clips are scheduled to air on the night of the 11th.
