The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) passed a resolution recommending the guarantee of President Yoon Seok-yeol's right to defend himself in the impeachment trial, among other key points.
At the 2nd plenary session held on the 10th, the NHRCK partially amended and then approved the agenda titled "Recommendation on Measures to Overcome the National Crisis Caused by the Declaration of Martial Law."
This agenda was proposed last month by Standing Commissioner Kim Yong-won and others, sparking strong opposition from civic groups and opposition parties.
Before the plenary session, lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties?including Jo Bae-sook, Park Chung-kwon, and Jo Ji-yeon from the People Power Party; Ko Min-jung and Seo Mi-hwa from the Democratic Party; and Shin Jang-sik from the Innovation Party?met with Chairman Ahn Chang-ho to convey their positions for and against the agenda.
Supporters of President Yoon gathered at the NHRCK from the morning, occupying the entrance to the meeting hall to prevent groups opposing the agenda from disrupting the meeting.
Meanwhile, the agenda re-submitted at the plenary session titled "NHRCK's Ex Officio Investigation and Opinion on the President's Declaration of Emergency Martial Law Destroying the Constitutional Order" was rejected without a vote.
