Dongdaemun Celebrity Lecture to Be Held at 3 PM on February 18 at the Multipurpose Auditorium, 2nd Floor of Dongdaemun-gu Office
Special Lecture by Kang Hyung-won: "The Value of Korean Cultural Heritage and the Power of Culture Through Photography"
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Ilpyeong Lee) has prepared a special time to hear stories about 'Korean Cultural Heritage in the World' from Kang Hyung-won, the first Korean journalist to win the Pulitzer Prize twice.
Kang Hyung-won, invited as the February guest speaker, worked as a photojournalist for major American media outlets such as the LA Times, AP News, and Reuters. He covered international news including the LA riots, the Iraq War, and the 9/11 attacks, winning the Pulitzer Prize twice for ▲LA riots coverage photos and ▲photos covering the scandal of former U.S. President Bill Clinton.
In particular, during the 1992 LA riots, he highlighted that Korean Americans were victims of the riots alongside African Americans, while also contributing to changing the image of Asian men from fragile stereotypes to strong men protecting their families and communities.
A district official said, “This will be a great opportunity to reflect on the 'power of culture' through Kang Hyung-won's perspective on the value and importance of Korean cultural heritage as seen through his photography, and his experiences covering cultural heritage stories while working at global media outlets.”
The lecture will be held on February 18th at 3 PM in the multipurpose auditorium on the 2nd floor of Dongdaemun-gu Office. Residents wishing to participate can apply through the Dongdaemun-gu website (Citizen Participation / Online Registration).
