95.2% Attendance Rate Recorded
Whereabouts Identified for 921 Out of 938 Absentees
Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (Acting Superintendent Choi Yoon-hong) announced the results of the preliminary enrollment gathering for children eligible for the 2025 school year, conducted from January 3 to 6 at 296 public elementary schools in the Busan area.
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education held the preliminary enrollment gathering over four days for the convenience of eligible children and their guardians, also conducting sessions during weekends and evenings to accommodate working couples.
Among 19,360 children eligible for enrollment, 18,422 attended the preliminary gathering, showing an attendance rate of 95.2%. The number of eligible children decreased by 2,200 from 21,560 last year.
Of the 938 absentees, the whereabouts of 921 were identified. Reasons for absence included enrollment exemption due to overseas schooling for 826 children and enrollment deferral for 95 children. The remaining 17 are presumed to be residing overseas based on confirmed departure information, but as contact with their guardians has not been established, investigations have been requested and responses are awaited.
The Office of Education plans to continuously contact related organizations such as community centers and local police stations to locate students whose whereabouts remain unknown and ensure their safety.
Acting Superintendent Choi Yoon-hong stated, “The preliminary enrollment gathering is an important procedure marking the first step into education for both students and parents. Our Office of Education will do its utmost, in cooperation with related agencies, to confirm the whereabouts and safety of all children eligible for enrollment who did not attend the preliminary gathering.”
