Fourth Academic Conference for World Heritage Inscription to Be Held on the 13th

The academic conference on "Ports of Departure and Distribution of Goryeo Celadon," aimed at inscribing the "Sites of Goryeo Celadon in Korea" as a World Heritage Site, jointly hosted by Gangjin County, Buan County, and Haenam County in Jeollanam-do, will be held on the 13th at the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage in Daejeon.


According to Gangjin County on the 10th, the theme of this academic conference is "Ports of Departure and Distribution of Goryeo Celadon." It is expected to serve as an opportunity to re-examine the status of Goryeo celadon, a representative cultural heritage of the Goryeo Dynasty, by identifying its transportation process and the scope of its domestic and international distribution.

Furthermore, the aim is to derive Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) and secure authenticity and integrity as the basis for the inscription of the "Sites of Goryeo Celadon in Korea" as a World Heritage Site.


The conference will feature five presentations: "Sites of Goryeo Celadon from a Topographical Perspective" (Professor Heo Uiheang, Suwon University); "Distribution and Historical Significance of Goryeo Celadon Sites" (Professor Jeong Yogun, Seoul National University, and four others); "Discussion on the Distribution of Goryeo Celadon and Review of Ports of Departure" (Professor Han Junghun, Mokpo University); "Distribution of Celadon as Temple Ware during the Goryeo Dynasty" (Researcher Choi Jaebeom, National Gyeongju Research Institute of Cultural Heritage); and "Current Status and Significance of Goryeo Celadon in Foreign Trade" (Chairman Han Sunguk, Institute of National Cultural Heritage).


The comprehensive discussion will be chaired by Professor Lee Jinhan of Korea University, with designated discussions on each topic led by Kang Dongseok (Professor, Dongguk University), Han Hyesun (Professor, Ewha Womans University Institute of Korean Culture), Lee Junkwang (Curator, Leeum Museum of Art), Kang Kyungnam (Curator, National Museum of Korea), and Jang Sunguk (Curator, National Gwangju Museum), promising a lively debate from various perspectives.


Gang Jinwon, the county governor, stated, "Since 2020, we have been working together with the goal of inscribing the 'Sites of Goryeo Celadon in Korea' as a World Heritage Site. Including this event, we have held a total of four academic conferences on the sites to gather materials for the World Heritage inscription," adding, "We plan to organize the research results as quickly as possible and submit a tentative list application for the 'Sites of Goryeo Celadon in Korea' to the National Heritage Administration."
