Seongdong-gu 'Majang-dong Birch Forest Garden' Designated as a No-Smoking Zone

Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that starting from February 10, the ‘Majang-dong Birch Forest Garden’ will be designated as a non-smoking area to create a more pleasant and healthy healing space for residents.

The ‘Majang-dong Birch Forest Garden (around Majang-dong 804)’ is a newly established garden-style resting area on the site of the north gate public parking lot of Majang Livestock Market, created last November. It was developed alongside the relocation and renovation of the Majang-dong food alley, a long-standing wish of residents, reflecting their demand for an urban park for healing and leisure.

The district will operate the area as a non-smoking zone based on Article 5 of the Seongdong-gu Ordinance on Prevention of Secondhand Smoke Damage, allowing residents to use the garden more cleanly and comfortably without inconvenience from secondhand smoke. From February 10 to 28, the area will be under a promotional and guidance period, and from March 1, strict enforcement will begin, with a fine of 100,000 KRW imposed for smoking.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “The designation of the ‘Majang-dong Birch Forest Garden’ as a non-smoking area aims to create a vacant space where anyone can rest comfortably and pleasantly, so we ask for active participation from residents.” He added, “We will continue to make meticulous efforts so that residents can lead healthy daily lives in a livable Seongdong-gu.”

Jungnang-gu Holds Design Competition for Muk 1-dong Complex Building

To be reborn as a new space encompassing the community center, autonomous hall, and health clinic

Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) is promoting a design competition for the ‘Muk 1-dong Complex Building New Construction Project’ to transform the aging Muk 1-dong Community Center into a resident-friendly complex building.

The competition runs from February 7 to March 24, with the final winner to be selected on April 10, 2025.

The design competition will be announced on the Seoul City design competition website, the Public Procurement Service, and the Jungnang-gu Office website. Registration for participation will take place from February 12 to 13, 2025. Subsequently, submissions will be accepted in person at the Architecture Department on the 2nd floor of Jungnang-gu Office on April 1, followed by evaluation and the announcement of the final winner on April 10. The selected design will proceed to detailed design and the project aims to commence construction in March 2026.

The Muk 1-dong Community Center, built 36 years ago, has shown limitations in meeting the changing administrative, cultural, and welfare needs of residents due to aging facilities. Accordingly, Jungnang-gu established a new construction plan for the Muk 1-dong Complex Building in 2021 and has been continuously working to build a complex building that residents can use more conveniently.

The Muk 1-dong Complex Building will be constructed on Muk-dong 120-2 and one other lot (site area 1,290㎡), with 2 basement floors and 4 above-ground floors, totaling 4,100㎡ in gross floor area. It will include a community center, autonomous hall, health clinic, life culture center, small library, multipurpose auditorium, and underground parking lot. The plan is to create a resident-friendly complex space that reflects residents’ cultural and welfare needs beyond a simple administrative facility. Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi stated, “Through this design competition, we will select creative and innovative designs to build a complex building that enhances residents’ quality of life,” adding, “We will do our best to create a more advanced public architecture model by communicating with the local community.”
