Tesla electric vehicles caught fire two days in a row in Dresden, eastern Germany. Amid growing local resentment toward Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, who is supported by far-right groups in Germany, the fire department suspects arson.
According to local media including MDR, the Dresden Fire Department reported that on the 9th (local time), fire reports were received for Teslas parked on city streets at around 1:20 a.m. the previous day and 1:25 a.m. on the same day.
The fire the previous day started under the hood, and the fire department stated that in both vehicles, the fire was prevented from spreading to the battery. The two fire locations are several hundred meters apart. A sticker reading "Stop Nazis" was found on the first vehicle that caught fire.
The police and fire authorities have ruled out technical issues as the cause and are suspecting arson and a connection between the two fires.
CEO Musk has drawn resentment by fully supporting the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) ahead of the German general election on the 23rd.
New Tesla car sales are plummeting locally, and used car prices are also sharply falling. Stefan Schneck, head of sales at the used car platform AutoScout24, said Teslas are coming onto the used car market with high discount rates, calling it the "Elon effect."
