Situation Review of the Seogyeongho Sinking
Minister Kang Do-hyung of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries held a situation review meeting with related agencies on the morning of the 9th to ensure the swift rescue of the large trawler 22 Seogyeongho, which sank about 20 nautical miles east of Geomundo, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Ministry of National Defense, Korea Coast Guard, Jeollanam-do, and Busan City, where they shared search and rescue status and plans.
At the meeting, Minister Kang said, "Please do not let your guard down and do your best to ensure that no one is left behind in the rescue. Also, please ensure that safety is not neglected during rescue operations."
Earlier that day, in the early morning near Habakdo, Yeosu, the 139-ton large trawler 22 Seogyeongho, registered in Busan, sank, resulting in 3 deaths and 7 missing persons. Three Koreans and four foreigners were rescued, but three Korean crew members, including Captain A (66), died.
Currently, the location of the sunken vessel has not been identified, making the search for the missing difficult. The Coast Guard is using underwater sonar equipment to locate the vessel, but the accident site has a depth of 80 meters and waves of about 1.1 meters, making it difficult to utilize radar equipment effectively.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has issued a 'Severe' crisis alert and formed a Central Accident Response Headquarters led by the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries.
