People Power Party: "If court accepts Lee Jae-myung's constitutional review request, it undermines rule of law"… Petition submitted

Joo Jinwoo, Head of the People Power Party's Legal Committee,
Submits Petition to Court on the 7th

The People Power Party submitted a petition condemning Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, who is undergoing a second trial for violating the Public Official Election Act, for requesting the court to refer the case for a constitutional review. Joo Jin-woo, head of the People Power Party's legal committee, warned, "If the court allows this, the principle of the rule of law could be undermined."

On the 7th, Joo submitted a petition through a staff member to the Seoul High Court, pointing out the problems with Lee's defense counsel's request for a constitutional review and urging the court to proceed swiftly with Lee's trial.

He pointed out, "The constitutionality of Article 250 of the Public Official Election Act (crime of false fact publication) has already been upheld several times by the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court," adding, "This current request for a constitutional review is likely to be seen in the same context."

He also introduced that "Lee has been criticized for deliberately delaying the trial through ▲intentional failure to appoint defense counsel ▲delays in service of process ▲massive evidence submissions."

Joo requested the court to dismiss the constitutional review request and to proceed with the trial promptly. He stated, "If the court allows this (constitutional review request), not only will the principle of the rule of law be undermined, but public distrust will also increase. Therefore, attempts to delay the trial must be thoroughly excluded, and a fair and swift judgment based on law and principles must be rendered," adding, "We strongly urge the appellate court to block the defendant's strategic delay attempts and to conclude the trial promptly."
