Last year, through active and aggressive overseas marketing by Pohang City, including inviting overseas buyers and holding export consultation meetings to diversify export markets, strawberries grown in Pohang achieved the milestone of entering Indonesia as fresh agricultural products for the first time.

The strawberries being exported this time total 647 kg, with 507 kg to Indonesia and 140 kg to Hong Kong transported by air. It is expected that over 10 tons of strawberries, including those to Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and the UAE, will be exported worldwide by April.

Pohang City, which has strategically fostered strawberries as a new export strategic item, was selected last year as a specialized strawberry export production complex by Gyeongbuk Province. To establish an export foundation, efforts are being made to install joint sorting centers and shift from the existing domestic-oriented variety Seolhyang to export varieties such as Geumsil and Alta King.

The strawberries exported to Indonesia this time are the result of securing export volume through joint shipment and joint sorting, as well as quality enhancement through improved cultivation techniques, finally achieving the milestone of securing export routes.

Lee Hyun-joo, director of the Agricultural Technology Center, said, “We take pride in the fact that Pohang strawberries have been recognized for their quality in the global market,” and added, “We will systematically nurture them to become a representative export item of Pohang’s fresh agricultural products by strengthening overseas marketing and establishing a stable production export foundation.”
