Cheonan City in South Chungcheong Province announced on the 6th that it has completed the construction of its Intelligent Transportation System (ITS).

The city was selected for the ITS expansion project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in 2021, and invested a total of 15.8 billion KRW to build the system in three phases by last year.

In the first phase, the city introduced priority signals for emergency vehicles and replaced outdated traffic display boards. In the second phase, smart intersections and crosswalks were installed at 199 locations along 64 kilometers of major roads.

Starting in 2023, the third phase expanded the installation of smart crosswalks, in-ground pedestrian signal lights, and red light countdown timers for pedestrians.

The city plans to collect real-time traffic information and adjust the signal operation system to reduce waiting times at intersections.

Additionally, within the first half of this year, the city will pilot a service that provides public transportation information to drivers through private navigation companies.
