First Among Four Major Championships to Allow LIV Golf Players
Top LIV Golf League Players to Participate
US Open to Begin on June 12 This Year
The US Open has granted eligibility to LIV Golf players.
According to the eligibility criteria for this year's US Open golf tournament announced by the United States Golf Association (USGA) on the 5th (local time), players who have performed well in LIV Golf can participate in the US Open regardless of their world ranking. Among the top 3 players in the LIV Golf individual rankings as of May 19 this year, the highest-ranked player who has not yet secured a US Open spot will advance to the main event. Additionally, the top 10 players as of April 7 this year will qualify to participate in the US Open sectional qualifiers.
The US Open is the first of the four men's major golf tournaments to open its doors to LIV Golf players. For the 2026 tournament, the field will expand to include two players: one among the top 3 in the 2025 LIV Golf final rankings who has not yet qualified for the US Open, and one among the top 3 as of May 18, 2026. For the 2026 US Open sectional qualifiers, the top 10 players from the 2025 final rankings and the top 10 as of April 2026 will be given the opportunity to compete.
Founded in 2022, LIV Golf is backed by Saudi Arabian capital and has had no direct path to major tournaments until now. All four major tournaments have provided eligibility to top-ranked players within the PGA Tour. Players competing in LIV Golf could only participate through high world rankings or by invitation.
Scott O'Neil, CEO of LIV Golf, said, "We are pleased that the USGA has provided LIV Golf players the opportunity to compete in the US Open," adding, "We express our gratitude to Mike Whan, USGA CEO, for his leadership. We believe this move will also contribute to the growth of the sport of golf." This year's US Open will be held over four days starting June 12 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, USA.
