"We do not want fentanyl coming in... Panama Canal also on the table"
Mexico tariffs postponed for one month... "Very good relationship"
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on the 4th (local time) ahead of the imposition of an additional 10% tariff on China, "We will probably be talking with China within 24 hours."
President Trump told reporters at the White House on the 3rd, "We do not want fentanyl coming into our country." He also warned, "If we do not reach an agreement, tariffs on China will increase further."
He said, "We have another big issue to discuss with China," adding, "China is involved with the Panama Canal. It will not last long, and it should not."
Earlier, on the 1st, President Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% tariff on all imports from China on top of existing tariffs. He cited trade deficits, fentanyl drug trafficking, and illegal immigration as reasons for imposing the tariffs. The executive order was scheduled to take effect on the 4th, but the U.S. decided to delay the tariff measures on Mexico by one month that morning. This was due to Mexico's promise to deploy 10,000 troops to the border to crack down on fentanyl and illegal immigration.
Regarding Mexico, President Trump said, "We have agreed to discuss and review several other topics," adding, "We have not yet reached an agreement on tariffs. We may or may not reach one, but we maintain a very good relationship."
President Trump is also conducting last-minute negotiations with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
He revealed on his social media platform Truth Social that he had spoken with Prime Minister Trudeau that morning and said, "I will speak with him again at 3 p.m." He claimed that the tariff measures are also "a war on drugs," stating, "Drugs have entered the U.S. through the borders with Mexico and Canada, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths in America."
Meanwhile, the U.S. government published the detailed tariff information for Canada and China in the Federal Register. According to the Federal Register, the new tariff measures on the two countries will take effect at 12:01 a.m. on the 4th.
