It has been confirmed that Park Seon-won, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, recommended President Donald Trump as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize with the intention of urging efforts for peace on the Korean Peninsula.
On the 3rd, Cho Seung-rae, the chief spokesperson for the Democratic Party, told reporters after a senior strategy meeting of the party, "Nobel Prize candidates must be recommended by the end of January, and Representative Park reportedly recommended President Trump for the Peace Prize on January 30," adding, "Representative Park made the recommendation based on his experience engaging with the Trump administration during the Moon Jae-in government, including North Korea-US dialogue."
Earlier in the meeting, Representative Park shared a memo he had written with Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, and Kim Min-seok, a Supreme Council member, and engaged in discussion.
Representative Cho said, "During Trump's first term, through North Korea-US talks, a stage was reached that created a turning point for establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula," and added, "Although it unfortunately collapsed, I hope this is understood as a preparation to convey the people's wish for efforts toward peace on the Korean Peninsula through dialogue with North Korea."
When asked whether this matter was pre-coordinated with the party leadership, Representative Cho replied, "There was a hint that 'something like this would be tried.'"
