U.S. President Donald Trump, who signed an executive order imposing high tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, announced that tariffs will also be imposed on the European Union (EU).
On the same day, President Trump met with reporters at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington, D.C., and when asked "Which country will be the next target for tariffs?" he said, according to Bloomberg News on the 3rd (local time), "We will definitely impose new tariffs on the EU."
President Trump also pointed out that "I can't say there is a specific timeline, but it will be soon," and criticized the EU for not importing enough American automobiles and agricultural products, Bloomberg News reported.
With President Trump's tariff measures, the tariff war among countries has intensified and expanded to include the EU.
The EU has stated that it will respond if such tariff imposition moves expand to the EU. On the 2nd, an EU Commission spokesperson told Bloomberg and others, "We regret the decision by the United States to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China." The spokesperson added that there are currently no plans for additional tariffs on the EU, but "we will respond firmly to any trade partner that imposes unfair or arbitrary tariffs on EU goods."
