Trump Reveals Ambition for Greenland
Denmark Responds: "Not for Sale"
JD Vance, the U.S. Vice President, expressed the United States' intention to annex Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. Despite Denmark's opposition to President Donald Trump's claim of ownership over Greenland, stating that "Greenland is not for sale," the U.S. shows no sign of backing down.
In an interview with Fox News on the 2nd (local time), Vice President Vance was asked whether the U.S. is likely to secure Greenland, to which he replied, "I think it is possible." He said, "Greenland plays a really important role in U.S. security," adding, "There is a sea route used by China and Russia, but Denmark does not fulfill a management role there."
He continued, "Consider how we can resolve this issue," and said, "President Donald Trump prioritizes the interests of the American people. He does not care about Europeans shouting."
This is interpreted as a sign that despite opposition from Denmark and several other countries toward President Trump's persistent desire for ownership of Denmark, the U.S. will not change its stance.
Denmark has owned Greenland since the 18th century. Greenland is an autonomous territory with a population of about 57,000. The U.S. Thule Air Base is located in Greenland.
President Trump has long coveted Greenland. On the 20th of last month, the day of his inauguration, he said, "Greenland is necessary for international security. I am confident that Denmark will cooperate."
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Rubio also stated in an interview with Reuters at the end of last month that "Trump's intention to purchase Greenland is not a joke."
As the threat of U.S. control over Greenland escalates, Denmark is focusing on solidifying support within Europe, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen visiting Germany, France, and Belgium in succession.
