Over 200 Earthquakes Hit Santorini Over the Weekend
Greek Authorities Restrict Indoor Gatherings and Port Access

Over 200 earthquakes occurred near the world-renowned tourist destination Santorini Island in Greece over the past weekend, prompting authorities to issue an emergency advisory restricting indoor gatherings and access to ports.

On the 2nd (local time), Reuters and CNN reported, "The Greek Civil Protection Department has noted an increase in seismic activity around Santorini and advised residents to refrain from indoor gatherings and accessing ports."

A school closure order was issued on the 3rd for Amorgos Island, Ios Island, and Anafi Island, including Santorini. More than 200 earthquakes were detected over three days starting from the 31st of last month, with the largest magnitude being 4.6. However, experts say these earthquakes are not related to volcanic activity.

Tents have been set up in outdoor stadiums, and police, fire, and ambulance teams are on emergency duty to prepare for any evacuation scenarios. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis chaired an emergency meeting on the earthquake situation in Athens.

Santorini, famous for its white houses with blue roofs, is located across several fault lines, making it prone to frequent earthquakes. Approximately 20,000 residents live there, and about 3.4 million tourists visit annually.
