Dobong-gu (Mayor Oh Eon-seok) is opening a native speaker online English learning course to enhance the global competencies of local elementary, middle, and high school students, and is recruiting students until February 28.
Since 2017, the district has signed a business agreement with Geonwoo Edu Co., Ltd. to provide native speaker online English learning education to local elementary, middle, and high school students.
The education is conducted as a real-time video lecture where one native English instructor converses with one or three students.
Students can attend classes using various devices such as tablets and smartphones regardless of location, receiving great responses from participants. Last year, a total of 1,127 students took the course, including 999 general students and 128 low-income students.
The eligible students are those registered as residents in Dobong-gu, from 3rd grade elementary to 3rd grade high school students, divided into general students (including multiple children families) and low-income groups (recipients, near-poverty class, single-parent families), recruiting 190 and 25 students respectively.
The course period is from March 4 to April 30. Students who wish to enroll should apply through the 'Dobong Native Speaker Online English' website by February 28. Enrollment will close on a first-come, first-served basis.
The tuition fee is 16,000 KRW per month for general students, and fully supported for low-income students. For multiple children families, a 10% discounted price of 16,000 KRW per month is supported. Detailed information about tuition fees can be found on the 'Dobong Native Speaker Online English' website.
Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “The native speaker online English learning education will improve accessibility and convenience in English learning, helping students enhance their language skills.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to prepare related educational programs so that students can learn English more effectively.”
Yeongdeungpo-gu Cares for Youth Mental Health Through Colors
‘Visiting Art Psychological Counseling’ for Youth... 1:1 Counseling with Art Psychologists on the ‘Mind Relief Bus’... Five Sessions per Person
Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) operates a visiting art psychological counseling program called ‘Bureung Bureung Mind Companion’ to support the mental health of young people struggling with worries and stress.
This program was established to help reduce youth concerns and restore a healthy daily life.
According to the ‘2022 Youth Life Survey’ released by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, 32.1% of youth fall into the depression risk group, and Yeongdeungpo has a higher proportion of single-person youth households compared to other districts, highlighting the importance of psychological support.
‘Bureung Bureung Mind Companion’ involves art psychologists traveling on the mobile counseling bus called the ‘Mind Relief Bus’ to visit youth wherever they are, providing 1:1 art psychological counseling in five sessions per person. Youth freely express their emotions using various tools such as paints, colored pencils, and clay, and counselors provide customized counseling based on this.
Counseling takes place at locations desired by the youth or near their residence, including health centers. Any youth aged 19 to 39 residing in Yeongdeungpo-gu can participate, and applications can be made by phone inquiry to the health center.
The district expects this program to help youth isolated due to job searching or interpersonal relationships overcome crises, recover mental health, and become confident members of society. The program will also expand to include elderly living alone and others to provide emotional care to more residents.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “We operate visiting art psychological counseling to lower the barrier to psychological counseling so that more youth can care for their mental health,” adding, “Yeongdeungpo will actively accompany youth so that those whose bodies and minds have shrunk can gain courage and step out into the world.”
Guro-gu Selected for Small Library Itinerant Librarian Support Project for Three Consecutive Years
Dispatch of Itinerant Librarians and Library Operation Support... Expanded from 4 Locations Last Year to 6 This Year
Guro-gu announced that it has been selected for the Small Library Itinerant Librarian Support Project, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Korea Library Culture Promotion Foundation, for three consecutive years and will expand the program starting this year.
The Small Library Itinerant Librarian Support Project sends itinerant librarians to small libraries lacking professional operating staff to assist with collection management, information services, practical training, and to help libraries operate efficiently.
Guro-gu was first selected for this public contest in 2023 and is now entering its third year of implementation.
The support scale has increased to six locations, two more than last year.
Accordingly, from this month through November, itinerant librarian support will continue at four public small libraries (Hangdong Community Center Small Library, Noisy Library, Initech Library, Dream Growth Small Library) and two private small libraries (Dreaming SH Small Library, Cheonwang Yeonji Town 1st Complex Small Library).
Itinerant librarians responsible for each library will not only support operations such as collection management but also strengthen the substance of small libraries by providing professional and systematic reading culture programs.
A Guro-gu official said, “We will continue to support the stable operation of small libraries and do our best to ensure no inconvenience in their use,” adding, “We hope residents visit nearby small libraries to find leisure and happiness in life.”
