Yeongdeungpo-dong · Singil-dong Takes Action to Prevent Flooding

Yeongdeungpo-dong · Singil-dong Takes Action to Prevent Flooding Perspective View of the New Yeongdeungpo Stormwater Pump Station (Draft)

Establishment of ‘Yeongdeungpo Rainwater Pump Station’, Discharging Up to 1,050 Tons of Rainwater per Minute

Expansion of Retention Basin Capacity at ‘Singil Rainwater Pump Station’ from 10,000㎥ to 13,800㎥

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced the commencement of a drainage improvement project in the Yeongdeungpo-dong and Singil-dong areas to prevent flood damage caused by heavy rainfall.

In August 2022, Yeongdeungpo experienced a record-breaking downpour of up to 110mm per hour, causing severe flooding of homes and commercial establishments. Accordingly, the district is making every effort to expand disaster prevention facilities and strengthen drainage functions to proactively prepare for disasters caused by climate change.

The rainwater pump station is a key disaster prevention facility that rapidly discharges rainwater from urban areas to rivers during heavy rain, playing an especially important role in preventing flooding in low-lying areas.

Accordingly, the district will establish the ‘Yeongdeungpo Rainwater Pump Station’ and expand the retention basin capacity of the ‘Singil Rainwater Pump Station’.

The Yeongdeungpo Rainwater Pump Station will be newly established at 94-32, Yeongdeungpo-dong 2-ga, capable of discharging up to 1,050 tons of rainwater per minute and storing up to 7,000 tons. Notably, this project will be carried out in conjunction with the ongoing ‘Yeongdeungpo Rotary Overpass Demolition’ project. After the overpass demolition, rainwater inflow pipelines will be installed under the rotary to enable smooth drainage even during heavy rain exceeding 100mm per hour.

Additionally, the retention basin capacity of the ‘Singil Rainwater Pump Station’ located in Singil-dong will be expanded from the existing 10,000㎥ to 13,800㎥ to enhance water storage functions. This will effectively block rainwater from flowing into low-lying areas during rainfall. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of this year, with completion targeted for 2028. Upon completion, the establishment of a stable drainage system is expected to fundamentally resolve flood damage in low-lying areas around Yeongdeungpo-dong, Singil-dong, and Yeongdeungpo Station, protecting the lives and property of local residents.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “Through this project, we will prevent damage caused by heavy rain in advance and build a more robust disaster prevention system. We will continue to prioritize the safety of residents by expanding infrastructure to respond to climate change and create a pleasant urban environment.”

Provision of 1,656 Moa Housing Units in the Area of 63-1, Myeonmokbon-dong, Jungnang-gu

Upgrading Zoning to Type 3 General Residential Area to Enhance Project Feasibility… Focus on Creating a Safe and Pleasant Residential Environment

Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) announced that the area of 63-1, Myeonmokbon-dong will be newly developed into a Moa housing complex with a total of 1,656 units.

Following the approval of the ‘Myeonmokbon-dong 63-1 Area Moa Town Management Plan (Draft)’ at the 2nd Small-scale Housing Maintenance Integrated Review Subcommittee of Seoul City for 2025 held on the 23rd of last month, the housing development project in Myeonmokbon-dong is expected to proceed in earnest.

The approved area of 63-1, Myeonmokbon-dong (covering 90,110㎡) consists of 75.8% aged detached houses and 22.3% semi-basement houses, resulting in poor residential conditions and rampant illegal parking. With the approval of this management plan (draft), a safe and pleasant residential environment is expected to be created.

To enhance project feasibility, the management plan includes upgrading the zoning from the existing Type 2 General Residential Area to Type 3 General Residential Area, establishing a traffic plan considering the development scale and adjacent redevelopment zones, and expanding roads from the existing 6m to 10-15m. Additionally, plans to create facilities for communal use by residents have also been prepared.

To improve accessibility for local residents, parks will be expanded and relocated along major roads, and street-type commercial areas will be developed along living streets to revitalize the local commercial district. Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “This housing development project has come to fruition thanks to the high interest and efforts of Myeonmokbon-dong residents. We will spare no support at the district level to ensure residents can enjoy a safe and convenient living environment.”

Mapo-gu to Organize Tangled and Complex Overhead Lines

Incentive of 360 Million KRW Added Following Overhead Cable Project Evaluation, Securing a Total of 2.16 Billion KRW

Mapo-gu (District Mayor Park Kang-soo) plans to organize overhead cables, which are tangled and complex, detracting from the cityscape and causing safety issues, by December 2025.

Mapo-gu secured an additional incentive of 360 million KRW from the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Telecommunications Operators Association, adding to the existing project budget of 1.8 billion KRW, bringing the total to 2.16 billion KRW to accelerate the overhead cable organization project.

The target areas for overhead cable organization will be selected first based on a survey by neighborhood, prioritizing narrow alleys and areas near old residential neighborhoods where residents have frequently requested maintenance.

The targets for organization include disorderly installed broadcasting and communication lines, excessively long slack lines, and abandoned lines. The organization period is from the end of May to December.

Since 2020, Mapo-gu has designated responsible telecommunications companies for each section to ensure efficient and accountable maintenance.

Employees in charge of overhead line maintenance at telecommunications companies noted, “Unlike other districts, Mapo-gu designates responsible telecommunications companies by section, enabling more systematic overhead line maintenance.”

The district plans to conduct a satisfaction survey among residents in the project areas upon completion in December and reflect their feedback in future projects.

Park Kang-soo, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Through continuous overhead cable maintenance projects, we will provide a safe walking environment and a pleasant urban environment, doing our best to make Mapo a better place to live.”
