To Canadian Citizens: "Buy Domestic Products, Spend Your Vacations at Home"
Canada announced retaliatory tariffs in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's imposition of a 25% tariff.
On the 1st (local time), Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced tariffs of the same rate after U.S. President Donald Trump applied a 25% tariff on Canadian products.
At a press conference that evening, Prime Minister Trudeau stated that a 25% tariff would be imposed on U.S. products worth 155 billion Canadian dollars (approximately 155.6 trillion Korean won). Tariffs on products worth 30 billion Canadian dollars will take effect from the 4th, and tariffs on the remaining products worth 125 billion Canadian dollars will be enforced after 21 days, he said.
Trudeau also mentioned that several non-tariff measures are being considered, including actions related to critical minerals, energy procurement, and other partnerships. He urged Canadian citizens to buy domestic products and spend their vacations in Canada.
Trudeau explained that Canada is cooperating with Mexico to respond to the U.S. tariffs. He also said that since President Trump's inauguration, he has been trying to contact him and hopes to have a conversation with him soon.
