Belgium Brussels Airspace Temporarily Closed During Day Due to 'Air Traffic Control Error'

The airspace over Brussels, the capital of Belgium, was closed for about an hour starting around noon on the 30th (local time), causing significant disruptions to flight operations, according to Euronews and other sources.

A spokesperson for Brussels Airport explained, "Due to a 'technical issue,' the customs system temporarily stopped functioning, making takeoffs and landings impossible, but operations gradually resumed after the system was rebooted."

The airport announced via X (formerly Twitter) around 5 p.m. that "air traffic has almost returned to normal."

According to foreign media, the temporary closure of the airspace caused the private plane carrying Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was heading to Brussels, to turn back. Originally, Prime Minister Fico was scheduled to visit Brussels to discuss issues related to the suspension of Russian natural gas shipments with the European Union (EU) leadership and Ukraine, but the meeting was postponed, an EU official said.
