The Asan City Council in Chungnam will hold a one-point special session on the 5th of next month to resubmit the resignation motion of Chairperson Hong Seongpyo.
On the 31st, the city council held its first councilors' meeting of the year and decided to resubmit the resignation motion of the chairperson and the by-election agenda at the 254th special session.
Regarding this, Kim Heeyoung, floor leader of the Democratic Party, said in a phone call that day, "Last time, the resignation motion was rejected," adding, "However, since Chairperson Hong has continued to urge his resignation this time, I don't think the same result will occur."
On the other hand, Lee Giae, floor leader of the People Power Party, stated, "There has been no consultation with the Democratic Party city councilors after the rejection."
Previously, Chairperson Hong caused controversy by attending his alma mater's graduation ceremony in a drunken state on the 10th. In relation to this, on the 14th, he said, "I fully accept responsibility," and submitted his resignation letter to the council secretariat.
Accordingly, the city council held a one-point special session on the 23rd and submitted the agenda items of referring the case to the Special Ethics Committee, the resignation of the chairperson, and the by-election of the chairperson.
The motion to refer the case to the Special Ethics Committee passed, but the resignation motion was rejected with 7 votes in favor and 9 against.
That night, Chairperson Hong issued a statement saying, "I have resubmitted my resignation letter and submitted my withdrawal from the Democratic Party."
Meanwhile, the Chungnam Provincial Chapter of the Democratic Party expelled Chairperson Hong on the 24th in accordance with party rules since he left the party during disciplinary proceedings.
