Japanese automaker Honda plans to launch an electric vehicle (EV) priced under $30,000 (approximately 43.44 million KRW) in North America as early as 2026, according to Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) on the 29th.
This EV will be one of the models in Honda's global EV series called the "Zero (O)" series, with a price point under $30,000, comparable to that of conventional gasoline vehicles.
Honda plans to introduce seven models in the Zero series by 2030, aiming to keep the price of compact EVs under $30,000. To produce low-priced EVs, Honda intends to establish an integrated system locally, from battery production to EV assembly.
The Zero series will begin production around the end of this year at plants including the one in Ohio, USA.
Currently, the average price of EVs in the United States is around $55,000. American companies are also actively pursuing the development of low-priced EVs.
General Motors (GM) is pushing to release the Bolt EV priced under $30,000 within this year, and Tesla is also planning to develop an EV priced under $30,000, Nikkei reported.
