At around 11:20 a.m. on the 27th, a 10-vehicle pileup occurred near Wonju IC on the Yeongdong Expressway heading towards Gangneung in Gahyeon-dong, Wonju-si, Gangwon-do, involving a bus and a passenger car.
As a result of the accident, two people, including a man in his 50s, Mr. A, the driver of the passenger car, were seriously injured, and seven others, including bus passengers, sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
The police are investigating the exact circumstances, including whether the accident was caused by icy road conditions.
Traffic on the affected section was completely blocked for about an hour due to accident clearance, causing severe congestion in the area. Wonju City sent safety text messages urging drivers to detour via the national road from Munmak IC.
On the same day, multiple pileup accidents occurred on the Dangjin-Yeongdeok Expressway in Sangju, Gyeongbuk, as vehicles slipped on icy roads.
According to the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency Highway Patrol, at around 11 a.m., a 28-vehicle pileup occurred at the 48 km mark on the Dangjin-Yeongdeok Expressway heading towards Cheongju in Hwanam-myeon, Sangju-si.
At a similar time, a 4-vehicle pileup occurred about 1 km away at the 47 km mark.
The police reported that so far, 12 people at the 48 km mark and 3 people at the 47 km mark, totaling 15 people, have sustained minor injuries.
Korea Expressway Corporation temporarily redirected vehicles entering Hwaseo IC in Hwaseo-myeon, Sangju-si, to detour via the national road due to the aftermath of the accidents.
