LG and Samsung Dominate the 'Best Washing Machines of the Year'
in Leading U.S. Consumer Magazine Consumer Reports
In the category of 'Best Large-Capacity Washing Machines of the Year' selected by the leading U.S. consumer magazine Consumer Reports, Korean companies such as LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics swept the top ranks by achieving the highest scores. In contrast, Chinese home appliance companies challenging the premium market struggled, failing to make the rankings.
Consumer Reports divided this year's best large-capacity washing machines into three categories: front-loaders (drum washers), top-loaders (agitator washers), and impeller washers, selecting a total of nine products, among which LG Electronics had eight and Samsung Electronics had one.
In the drum washer category, LG Electronics took the top three spots. In particular, the LG Tromm washer, ranked first, received the highest score (87 points) among 114 models evaluated for performance. Consumer Reports stated, "It has excellent washing performance and received the highest scores in energy and water efficiency tests." The second-place ultra-premium appliance, the 'LG Signature' washer, was also recognized for its sophisticated design and outstanding performance.
LG Electronics also secured the first to third places in the top-loader washer category. All three selected LG top-loader washers received the 'Green Choice' certification. Consumer Reports awards the 'Green Choice' certification after testing washers for water and energy efficiency, brand reliability, and the condition of laundry after washing.
In the impeller washer category, LG Electronics took first and second place, while Samsung Electronics secured third place.
On the other hand, Chinese leading brands Hisense and Midea, which are challenging the North American market, did not make the rankings in this evaluation. Among Chinese brands, only Midea was selected for the impeller washer performance evaluation, but it scored a total of 58 points. While the condition of fabrics after washing and vibration were noted as strengths, it received no points in brand reliability and customer satisfaction categories.
Consumer Reports does not receive test products from manufacturers but purchases products sold on the market directly and evaluates them under strict expert standards. The evaluation is highly reliable as it includes not only product performance but also brand reliability and satisfaction surveys conducted with actual users.
LG Electronics has maintained the No. 1 position in overall home appliance (8 categories) brand reliability in Consumer Reports' home appliance brand reliability evaluation for six consecutive years since 2019.
According to market research firm Trackline, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics recorded market shares of 19% and 21%, respectively, in the U.S. home appliance market by sales in 2023.
