This year, the Lunar New Year holiday offers a break of at least six days and up to nine days, giving travelers some peace of mind on their journeys to and from their hometowns. However, heavy snowfall and severe cold are expected due to a sharp drop in temperatures, so drivers are advised to exercise extra caution.
During the Lunar New Year holiday, the weather in Gwangju and Jeonnam is expected to remain mostly clear through the weekend, but temperatures will drop significantly next week, with forecasts of snow or rain.
According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration on the 24th, Gwangju and Jeonnam will experience mostly clear and mild weather on the 25th, when the holiday begins. However, from the 27th, temperatures will drop sharply, bringing strong winds, snow, and rain.
In particular, temperatures are expected to plummet around the day of the Lunar New Year. From the 24th to the 27th, morning lows will range from minus 4 to plus 4 degrees Celsius, and daytime highs will be between 8 and 13 degrees Celsius, higher than average for this time of year.
However, from the 28th to the 31st, morning temperatures will drop to as low as minus 11 degrees Celsius, and daytime highs will stay between 3 and 6 degrees Celsius. On the 27th, Gwangju and Jeonnam are expected to see rain or snow, and on the 28th and 29th, heavy snowfall is likely, especially in northern Gwangju and Jeonnam. Strong winds on the 28th and 29th will make it feel even colder.
Meanwhile, the sea will see very high waves in the far southern waters of the South Sea and the southern part of the West Sea from the 25th to the 26th, and in the West Sea and far southern waters of the South Sea from the 27th to the 30th, with high wave advisories expected.
