A 'Decarbonization' Solution That Minimizes Fuel Consumption

HD Hyundai Marine Solutions' AI-based optimal route solution, 'OceanWise,' will be applied to domestic shipping company vessels for the first time. OceanWise is a decarbonization solution that minimizes fuel consumption by shortening the navigation distance as much as possible.

HD Hyundai Marine Solutions, a comprehensive marine solutions company under HD Hyundai, announced on the 24th that it signed a contract on the 19th to supply OceanWise to SK Shipping, Hyundai Glovis, and some vessels operated by both companies. OceanWise is a program that uses big data and AI algorithms to suggest the optimal route from the vessel's current location, minimizing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Previously, since April last year, HD Hyundai Marine Solutions has been verifying the actual effectiveness of OceanWise through a business agreement with HD Hyundai Oilbank. In performance tests conducted over a total of 13 sections and 106,000 km of navigation, OceanWise was confirmed to have an average fuel-saving effect of 5.3%. This translates to a single vessel using 10,000 tons of fuel annually saving approximately 350 million KRW in fuel costs.

To enhance the accuracy and objectivity of the demonstration work, HD Hyundai Marine Solutions departed from the conventional method of simply comparing navigation data and utilized the world's first 'twin vessel' verification method. This method increases the reliability of the demonstration by operating the control group vessel on the same section simultaneously and then swapping captains for the next section.

An official from HD Hyundai Marine Solutions said, "Securing the trust of cargo owners and shipping companies in OceanWise through the demonstration was a decisive factor in this supply contract," adding, "We will do our best to make OceanWise the standard decarbonization solution in the future vessel market."

HD Hyundai Marine Solutions plans to expand the application of OceanWise regardless of vessel type and size and to grow the market by launching a subscription-based product.
