Attorney Kim Sujeong (30th class of the Judicial Research and Training Institute), a member of the Seoul Bar Association, has been selected as the recipient of the 6th Hong Namsun Human Rights Award.
The Gwangju Bar Association presented the award to Attorney Kim at its 78th regular general meeting on the 21st.
Attorney Kim has served as a joint legal representative in the constitutional lawsuit for the abolition of the Hojuje system and as the head of the joint legal team in the constitutional lawsuit against abortion laws. She also participated in defending conscientious objectors to military service and in constitutional lawsuits regarding related provisions of the Military Service Act, leading to a decision of unconstitutionality.
Additionally, she has a history of handling lawsuits related to overseas adoption, such as representing cases of deported overseas adoptees and state compensation lawsuits for illegal overseas adoptions of missing children, in order to investigate state human rights violations during the overseas adoption process of over 200,000 children in the 1970s and 1980s. She has also served as an expert member in the field of children's rights at the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, a non-standing member of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, and an expert member of the Korea Women's Hotline Federation, among other roles.
In recognition of these contributions, Attorney Kim has received several awards, including the Gender Equality Stepping Stone Award in 2005 and 2018, the Presidential Commendation for Gender Equality Promotion in 2019, the Korean Bar Association Public Interest Award in 2020, and the Legal Community Service Award from the Legal Community Association in 2022.
Jang Jeonghee, president of the Gwangju Bar Association, stated, "We are discovering lawyers who are actively working for the socially disadvantaged in places that often go unnoticed," and added, "Through the presentation of the Human Rights Award, we will continue to foster a spirit of public interest, promote human rights, and enhance legal culture."

Meanwhile, the "Hong Namsun Human Rights Award" was established in 2018 by the Gwangju Bar Association on its 70th anniversary to honor and carry on the achievements and legacy of the late Attorney Hong Namsun, who dedicated his life to the defense of human rights and the realization of the rule of law.
