Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Ilhyung Lee Supports Traditional Markets Ahead of Lunar New Year

Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Ilhyung Lee is visiting traditional markets from the 20th to encourage merchants and contribute to revitalizing the local economy and ensuring safety during the Lunar New Year holiday.

Starting with Cheongnyangni Fish Market and Gyeongdong Market on the 20th, Mayor Lee visited traditional markets and spoke directly with merchants in the middle of the markets to hear about their difficulties.

In response to a merchant’s words, “We gain strength thanks to customers who come despite the hardships,” Mayor Lee warmly held the merchant’s hand and said, “The district office is also considering various support measures for small business owners.”

On the 21st, Mayor Lee visited Cheongnyangni Agricultural and Marine Products Market, bustling from early morning, greeting merchants carrying large boxes and customers with a bright smile. Mayor Lee plans to visit a total of 13 markets by the 24th.

Dongdaemun-gu is making various efforts to revitalize traditional markets for the Lunar New Year holiday. Through the Lunar New Year event contest project and the Onnuri gift certificate refund event, it is attracting customers and increasing merchants’ sales at 20 traditional markets, including Gyeongdong Market.

At the same time, the district is doing its best to prevent safety accidents among the surge of visitors during the holiday period.

The district collects and analyzes data on densely crowded areas to predict accident risks in advance, visualizes pedestrian data in highly congested sections, and has established a system that quickly broadcasts alerts through intelligent CCTVs, emergency bells, and speakers when crowd density increases. In fact, staff at the district office’s Disaster Safety Situation Room and CCTV Control Center actively monitor real-time crowd situations through intelligent CCTV screens.

Mayor Ilhyung Lee of Dongdaemun-gu said, “Ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, we are doing our best to revitalize the local economy centered on traditional markets and to manage smart safety. The district will conduct thorough safety inspections and spare no effort in providing various support so that all residents can spend the holiday comfortably and safely.”
