Usancheon is a region where the current channel width is narrower than the planned channel width according to the basic river plan, and due to sediment deposits on the riverbed, flooding and embankment overtopping occurred during the heavy rain in August 2022.
Accordingly, the city divided the project into a 1.3 km functional restoration section upstream (from Gwaneum 1 Bridge to Usan 1 Bridge) and a 4.2 km improvement and restoration section mid- to downstream (from Ori Bridge to Gwaneum 1 Bridge). Over 2 years and 4 months, a total budget of 26.3 billion KRW was invested to complete all flood damage restoration works in the Usancheon area, thereby enhancing flood control functions by securing the river's flow cross-section.
Mayor Bang Se-hwan stated, “We will strive to ensure that the heavy rain damage like that in 2022 does not recur by establishing thorough prior preparations and a rapid response system so that the citizens of Gwangju can enjoy a safe and happy life.”
