Trump Signals Repeal of AI Executive Order Even Before Election
U.S. President Donald Trump has decided to repeal former President Joe Biden's executive order on artificial intelligence (AI), signaling a potential easing of regulations on AI safety.
On the 20th (local time), Trump repealed the AI-related executive order introduced in 2023, according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). Prior to this, Trump had consistently expressed his intention to abolish Biden administration's AI executive order even before the presidential election.
The executive order required companies to notify the government when developing AI-related models that could impact national security, the economy, or public health. It also directed agencies to develop standards and metrics for testing AI systems and included provisions to limit bias and discrimination, which Trump criticized during his campaign. Some small tech companies have criticized the requirements in the executive order, arguing that they would hinder technological innovation.
WSJ reported that it is unclear what the Trump team will replace Biden's executive order with after repealing it.
