WSI announced on the 21st that its subsidiary Easy Medi Bot has filed a U.S. patent for the world's first robot uterine elevator, 'U-BOT.'
The patent filed this time covers the technology for a 'uterine elevator, a uterine elevator robot including the same, and a uterine elevator system including the same.' Easy Medi Bot had previously obtained a domestic patent for U-BOT in 2023.
The company was selected in 2021 for the Ministry of Health and Welfare research project 'Micro Medical Robot Practical Technology Development Project (research fund of 8 billion KRW)' and has been developing the technology together with Professor Hyunhoon Jung's team from Seoul National University Hospital's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Professor Byungkyu Kim's team from Korea Aerospace University. After completing the research project, related technologies and patents were secured in 2024.
U-BOT is an assist robot designed to support gynecological laparoscopic surgery. By automating the uterine elevation task, it can reduce surgery time and human error. Even in surgeries using expensive robotic equipment costing 2 to 3 billion KRW, the uterine elevation task is a high-intensity job that medical staff must perform while sitting for long periods, so U-BOT is attracting attention as a technology to address the shortage of medical personnel.
According to a company official, "Easy Medi Bot is currently undergoing product approval and quality management certification from the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA)," adding, "It is expected to receive approval as early as the end of this year."
They continued, "We are promoting the product to domestic gynecology and oncology departments and plan to actively participate in overseas exhibitions such as Medica (Germany) and Arab Health (Dubai)," explaining, "Once product approval is completed, we will begin full-scale domestic sales and exports."
