Official Approval from SBTi
Securing a Foundation for Climate Change Response Implementation
HS Hyosung Advanced Materials announced on the 21st that it has officially received approval for its greenhouse gas reduction targets through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for 2030.
The SBTi is a global initiative established by major international organizations such as the World Resources Institute (WRI), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It verifies whether companies' greenhouse gas reduction targets are based on scientific evidence aimed at limiting the global average temperature rise to within 1.5℃.
The approval of HS Hyosung Advanced Materials' greenhouse gas reduction targets is significant in that it secures a foundation for climate change response implementation through scientifically verified goals.
The approved greenhouse gas reduction target aims to reduce the total amount of direct emissions from energy use and processes at global business sites, as well as indirect emissions from purchased electricity and steam, by 42% by 2030 compared to 2021. Additionally, it plans to reduce by 25% the largest portion of other indirect emissions within the value chain, including emissions from suppliers, specifically those related to fuel and energy activities and emissions generated during the purchase of goods and services.
To achieve these reduction targets, HS Hyosung Advanced Materials plans to actively implement specific action plans such as reducing greenhouse gas and energy use at business sites, installing solar power facilities, and entering into power purchase agreements (PPA). Furthermore, it will request major partners to establish greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and support their reduction activities.
Jindal Lim, CEO of HS Hyosung Advanced Materials, emphasized, “The SBTi approval is important not only because it sets reduction targets but also because it confirms that our activities have secured internationally recognized scientific validity. We will continue to strengthen our global environmental leadership and strive for a sustainable future.”
