Adding Depth to Public Building Design
Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 21st that it has successfully completed the design competition for the construction of the Wondang Complex Community Center and will commence the design service in January 2025.
This design competition was conducted through close cooperation between Goyang City's General Planning Team and the project departments. This strengthened the professionalism of the design competition process and coordinated the opinions of various stakeholders to secure a high-quality public building design proposal.
The Design Competition Steering Committee of the General Planning Team (△ Lee Je-seon, General Planner △ Jeong Won-young, Jeon Won, Choi Gyu-hyun, Public Planners) focused on securing accessible publicness, implementing an eco-friendly image, creating three-dimensional external space connections among the library, family center, and adjacent park, and utilizing the 4m retaining wall at the rear park boundary for landscaping and access. They provided advisory support related to the design competition and played a crucial role throughout the competition process.
The winning design for the Wondang Complex Community Center architectural design competition centers on "Open Park, Open Living Room, Open Community Center," emphasizing openness and publicness that allows easy access for all citizens alongside the adjacent park, establishing it as a representative convenience facility for local residents.
On the easily accessible low-rise first floor facing the road, family center and support facilities such as a book caf? and childcare support center are arranged, while the upper floors house the library to provide a calm reading environment.
In particular, a grand stair (a large staircase connecting all floors) is planned on the first floor along the 4m retaining wall at the rear of the site, with a second-floor bridge designed to connect naturally to the park, creating a seamless flow.
Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang City stated, "Taking this design competition as an opportunity, we plan to continuously collaborate with private experts to enhance the city's dignity and expand public building projects that residents can feel directly." He added, "We will do our best to provide residents with a better living environment through the construction of the Wondang Complex Community Center."
Meanwhile, the Wondang Complex Community Center will be constructed on a site of 2,388㎡ at 406-5 Seongsa-dong, Deogyang-gu, Goyang City, with a total floor area of 6,300㎡ spanning from one basement floor to four above-ground floors, and a total investment of 30 billion KRW is expected.
