Taean Seollal Ssireum Championship Kicks Off on the 24th

Held at Taean Indoor Gymnasium Until the 30th

The Seollal Ssireum Championship, a traditional wrestling tournament that will heat up the sandpit during the Lunar New Year holiday, will be held in Taean, Chungnam for the second consecutive year.

The Taean County Office announced on the 20th that the "Withus Pharmaceutical 2025 Taean Seollal Ssireum Championship" will be held at the Taean Indoor Gymnasium from January 24 to 30 to celebrate the nation's biggest holiday, Seollal.

The Seollal Ssireum Championship is a festival aimed at promoting and developing the traditional sport of Ssireum during the nation’s largest holiday. It is hosted by the Korea Ssireum Association and organized by the Taean Ssireum Association.

The tournament will kick off on the 24th with the Sobaek division matches, followed by the Sobaek Champion finals and Taebaek division matches on the 25th. On the 26th, the opening ceremony will take place along with the Geumgang division matches and Taebaek Champion finals.

On the 27th, the Hallasan division matches and Geumgang Champion finals will be held, while on the 28th, the Baekdu division matches and Hallasan Champion finals will take place. On the 29th, the women’s divisions?Maehwa, Gukhwa, and Mugunghwa?along with the women’s team event and Baekdu Champion finals will be held in succession.

On the final day, the 30th, the women’s three weight class champion finals will mark a spectacular finale. The matches will be broadcast on terrestrial TV (KBS1) and cable sports channel (KBS N).

For the convenience of visitors using public transportation, a shuttle bus will operate again this year following last year’s service.

The bus route starts at Taean Public Bus Terminal and travels to the Indoor Gymnasium, stopping at seven locations: in front of Daiso, at the Post Office Intersection, Seobu Standby Area (old terminal), Kim Seokhyun Internal Medicine, Jungang-ro Square, Lee Seokmin Pizza, and across from the main gate of Saebitmaeul Apartments.

Based on the terminal departure time, the shuttle will run five times in the morning (10:00~12:00) and ten times in the afternoon (13:00~17:30) at 30-minute intervals, for a total of 15 trips per day. The service will operate daily for the seven days of the tournament, from January 24 to 30.

The county has completed preparations, including facility maintenance for a successful tournament, and plans to actively promote Taean’s cultural tourism resources and local specialties. At the same time, they are determined to achieve excellent results and showcase Taean County as a stronghold of Ssireum both domestically and internationally.

A county official stated, "We are delighted to once again showcase the charm of the holiday Ssireum tournament in Taean, following the 2021 Chuseok Ssireum Championship and last year’s Seollal Championship," adding, "Based on our accumulated experience, we will thoroughly prepare and pay close attention to every detail to ensure a successful event."
