According to the press conference held by the Seoul Museum of Art on the 20th, the Seoul Museum of Photography will open in Chang-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul, this May. As the only public photography museum in Korea, it plans to showcase exhibitions specialized in photographic culture.
The opening exhibition will introduce five photographers including Jeong Hae-chang, Lim Seok-je, Lee Hyeong-rok, Jo Hyun-du, and Park Young-sook, titled "Gwangchae (光彩): Moments of Beginning." Additionally, six artists including Won Seong-won and Jeong Mel-mel will reveal the work "Storage Story," which captures the process of establishing the photography museum.
The Seoseoul Museum of Art will open in the second half of the year in Doksan-dong, Geumcheon-gu, Seoul. It plans to operate programs specialized in new media, convergent arts, and art education for youth and vulnerable groups, tailored to the characteristics of the southwestern Seoul region.
With the opening of these two museums, the Seoul Museum of Art will have a total of eight branches, including the Seosomun Main Building, Bukseoul Museum of Art, Namseoul Museum of Art, Art Archive, Nanji Art Studio, and the Nam June Paik Memorial Hall.
This year, the themes set by the Seoul Museum of Art are "Action" and "Planet." At the Seosomun Main Building, a solo exhibition of contemporary female artist Kang Myung-hee will be held starting in March. It will comprehensively cover her artistic career and major works spanning over 60 years, from her early works in the 1960s to her latest pieces.
From March, the permanent exhibition hall at the Seosomun Main Building will present the 80th anniversary of Liberation exhibition. Titled "Seosi: With a Heart That Sings to the Stars," it will explore themes of liberation, the Korean War, division, and harmony through the Gana Art Collection and the Seoul Museum of Art’s holdings.
The Namseoul Museum of Art will start with an exhibition on Jeon Guk-gwang, who showed notable activity in modernist abstract sculpture, followed by solo exhibitions of representative Korean modern sculptors who need reappraisal.
Starting in April, the Bukseoul Museum of Art will hold "The Star World Called Painting - With the Lee Kun-hee Collection," highlighting the intrinsic value of flat painting through the journeys of ten artists.
The Seoul Museum of Photography, Korea’s first public museum specialized in photography opening this May, will launch its special opening exhibition "Gwangchae: Moments of Beginning," deeply examining five photographers including Jeong Hae-chang who marked significant turning points in the history of Korean photographic art.
