Honam University announced on the 19th that the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (led by Professor Yoon Young) recently held the 4th roundtable of the third year as part of a project supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea. The roundtable, held on the 16th, was attended by the principal researcher, co-researchers, full-time researchers, and assistant researchers.

At the roundtable, Park Jonghyun, a co-researcher from the Department of Architecture at Honam University, gave a presentation on the topic "Cultural Literacy in Contemporary Architecture and Fashion: The Omnivorousness of High Culture and Popular Culture."

Researcher Park explained the methods of cultural consumption and distinction between social classes through Pierre Bourdieu's theories of cultural capital and homology. He also introduced the concept of omnivorousness?a cultural consumption pattern that embraces both high culture and popular culture?and developed discussions on contemporary architecture and fashion.

This stems from the awareness that, despite the dissolution and blurring of boundaries between traditional high culture, art, and other elements in the modern era, discussions on architecture and fashion remain insufficient.

Based on this theoretical background, Researcher Park divided his discussion into sections: ▲Homology between contemporary architecture and fashion ▲Branding and the fashionization of architecture ▲Consumer society and architectural omnivorousness.

The subsequent comprehensive discussion among the researchers was held under the theme of "Pierre Bourdieu and Georg Simmel."

The researchers discussed their individual perceptions of omnivorousness, and confirmed that the discourse on 'high culture and popular culture' has been formed across various academic fields, including literature, fashion, music, art, and sports.

Meanwhile, Honam University is the only private university in the Honam region to be selected for the National Research Foundation's "Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institute Support Project." Under the theme "Research on Liberal Arts Education to Foster Humanities Literacy in a Hyperconnected Society," the university has been conducting the first phase of research with government funding since 2019, and has been continuously carrying out the second phase since September 2022, which will continue until August this year.
