A University Applicant Who Almost Had to Retake the Exam Due to a Mistake, Ultimately... DGIST "Processed as Accepted"

Lim Taehee, Superintendent of Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, Seeks Solution After Hearing Student's Situation

A test-taker who was unable to enroll in any university due to a university's mistake was ultimately helped by Lim Tae-hee, Superintendent of Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education.

On the 17th, Yonhap News reported that Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST) notified a third-year high school student from the Gyeonggi area, Mr. A, that it had canceled his rejection decision and processed his acceptance.

On the 26th of last month, Mr. A received a call from DGIST informing him of his acceptance and subsequently gave up his admission to the science and engineering department at Ajou University, where he had also been accepted. According to the rule that only one university can be chosen in case of multiple acceptances, he selected DGIST. However, he later found that his name was not on the list of accepted students. When he tried to register for admission by accessing the website, his name was not on the acceptance list. Upon inquiring with the DGIST admissions office, he was told that due to an error in registering accepted students, he had been mistakenly notified of acceptance and was actually rejected. They added, "Admission is impossible, but we will take legal responsibility."

As a result, the student could not attend Ajou University, where he had been accepted through early admission, and since he had voluntarily given up early admission, he was also unable to proceed with the regular admission process. At the time, Mr. A told Yonhap News, "I feel very wronged," and expressed frustration, saying, "DGIST should take proper responsibility, but they are not doing so. The damage I have to bear due to the school's mistake is too great." After his story of grievance became known, Lim Tae-hee, Superintendent of Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, consulted with related government departments such as the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and ICT to seek a solution.

Superintendent Lim said, "DGIST's response to the affected student that they will 'take legal responsibility' is an irresponsible answer that should never be given to a student, as it does not put the student at the center," and he contacted related government departments including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and ICT in various ways to find a solution.

He also demanded that DGIST come up with a resolution plan at the education office level and requested the Korea Council for University Education to take measures to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Eventually, on the same day, DGIST held an admissions management committee meeting and decided to admit Mr. A.

Superintendent Lim posted on his Facebook, "Regardless of the circumstances, there should never be a case where a student's dreams are crushed due to adults' mistakes," and added, "The education office is committed to being a protector whenever students, teachers, or staff face unjust situations."

He continued, "Congratulations to Mr. A on his acceptance," and added, "I am grateful to DGIST for responsibly making the acceptance decision, even if belatedly."
