Netizen Identified as A Reveals Complaint on SNS
"JK Kim Dong-wook, a Canadian Who Renounced Korean Citizenship"
A person has emerged who intends to file a complaint against singer JK Kim Dong-wook (real name John Kim), who has publicly voiced support for President Yoon Suk-yeol multiple times. JK Kim Dong-wook, a Korean-Canadian, is accused of violating the Foreigners' Political Activity Prohibition Act.
Recently, a netizen identified as A posted on their social media (SNS), "JK Kim Dong-wook is scheduled to be reported for violating the prohibition on foreigners' political activities. He was a singer I enjoyed for a long time, but I deleted everything last year," along with a complaint document. The complaint document revealed by A begins with the sentence, "At 10:27 PM on December 3, 2024, President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law without following the procedures stipulated in the Constitution, and the next day, martial law was lifted with the approval of 190 members of the National Assembly." It then states, "In response, John Kim (hereafter JK Kim Dong-wook), a foreign national, publicly posted multiple opposing opinions regarding President Yoon's impeachment on his SNS (Threads, Instagram, etc.)."
A stated, "JK Kim Dong-wook is confirmed to have renounced his Korean nationality and acquired Canadian citizenship as a foreigner," adding, "On January 3, 2025, he held a large-scale rally near the presidential residence and posted the content on SNS, and it has been confirmed that he continued to post political statements thereafter." The legal issues section of the complaint reads, "Whether there is a violation of Article 17, Paragraph 2 of the Immigration Control Act. According to Article 17 (Scope of Stay and Activities of Foreigners) of the Immigration Control Act, foreigners residing in the Republic of Korea are prohibited from engaging in political activities, and violations may be subject to punishment."
JK Kim Dong-wook criticized the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) earlier this month on his SNS, stating, "Protecting the president is the way to protect the country." JK Kim Dong-wook Instagram
JK Kim Dong-wook has repeatedly expressed support for President Yoon through SNS. On the 3rd, he posted a photo of the Taegeukgi flag with the phrase, "Protecting the president is protecting the country. Corruption Investigation Office who?" Later, he announced the cancellation of a scheduled performance in Daegu on the 25th, lamenting, "The cancellation was due to absurd provocations by outsiders who filed complaints not from the attendees but with the intention to threaten that they would protest if the performance proceeded." Notably, on the 11th, he used aggressive language, saying, "I will tear you apart."
On the 15th, he encouraged, "I firmly believe in the president's regrettable but wise decision, and this situation will surely be reflected in the soaring approval ratings. I am confident that this week's research will show (President Yoon's approval rating) surpassing the 51% during the impeachment of Roh Moo-hyun. From now on is the real starting point for setting the country right. Let's cheer up." JK Kim Dong-wook is known to have immigrated to Canada in his first year of high school in 1992 and acquired Canadian citizenship.
