Namwon City Health Center Supports Type 1 Diabetes Patients... Only One in the Province

Selection of 101 Eligible Recipients

Namwon City Public Health Center in Jeonbuk (Director: Han Yongjae) announced on the 17th that it will be the only institution in the province to implement the 'Type 1 Diabetes Patient Support Project' this year.

'Type 1 diabetes' is a metabolic disorder in which beta cells that produce insulin are destroyed by immune mechanisms, resulting in the body's inability to produce insulin. It mainly occurs in children and adolescents, and requires continuous management through daily insulin injections and diabetes management devices.

The city has established this project as a new policy this year to reduce the financial burden and support stable and continuous treatment for type 1 diabetes patients and their families, and will provide support for type 1 diabetes patients.

The eligible recipients are 101 residents of Namwon City who have been registered for at least six months: 5 under the age of 19 and 96 aged 19 or older.

The public health center will provide support for three types of diabetes management devices (insulin pump, continuous glucose monitor, continuous glucose monitoring sensor) purchased after January 1 this year. For those under 19, 90% of the patient's 10% copayment (up to 1 million KRW) will be supported, and for those 19 and older, 20% of the patient's 30% copayment (up to 1.24 million KRW) will be supported.

To implement this project, the city completed the enactment of an ordinance on support for type 1 diabetes patients and consultations with the Ministry of Health and Welfare for the establishment of a new social security system in April last year. As a new health care support project for vulnerable groups, the city actively allocated a budget of 66 million KRW for the 'Type 1 Diabetes Patient Support Project.'

The public health center is actively promoting the project through visits to local hospitals, clinics, and the Office of Education, as well as through related organizations, local leaders, media, electronic billboards, and senior centers' IPTV, to ensure that all eligible recipients can benefit from the new policy. The center also plans to manage the registration of eligible patients and the health of patients and their families in connection with the home health care management project.

Director Han Yongjae stated, "Through this project, eligible recipients will be able to receive support for diabetes management devices such as advanced insulin pumps, which were previously difficult to purchase due to high medical costs. We expect this will help ensure stable management of type 1 diabetes for the recipients. Namwon City Public Health Center will continue to do its best to promote the health of our citizens."
