Operation of Educational Programs Including the "Historic Site Tour Bus"
The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education has established a plan to promote education on the May 18 Democratic Uprising, aiming to expand it not only nationwide but also globally.
On the 15th, the Office of Education announced that it will operate programs this year to revitalize education on the May 18 Democratic Uprising.

In particular, new initiatives such as the “Historic Site Tour Bus” and the “Development of Educational Materials for the May 18 Democratic Uprising” will be launched to strengthen experiential activities where students can actively participate and vividly learn about historical facts.
The “May Bus for the May 18 Historic Site Tour,” introduced for the first time this year, will support two buses per school so that students can conveniently visit major historic sites such as the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery and Jeonil Building 245 during April and May.
Additionally, educational materials for the “May 18 Democratic Uprising Commemorative Education” will be developed and distributed from April to 16 metropolitan and provincial offices of education nationwide, as well as to all elementary, middle, high, and special schools. The materials include commemorative education PPTs for at least two class periods, activity materials, and lesson plans, all designed to help teachers educate students about the May 18 Democratic Uprising, considering the level of each school and student.
Existing projects will also continue.
The Office of Education will ensure that all schools provide at least two hours of education on the May 18 Democratic Uprising annually as part of cross-curricular learning topics. In celebration of the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising this year, up to 600,000 KRW will be provided per school to support commemorative events that reflect each school’s unique characteristics.
The student-centered exchange program with Taiwan, which has been ongoing, will be further developed by combining it with the “Student Global Leader World Tour” into the “Visiting May 18 Democratic Uprising International Exchange Program.” Through this program, students will gain an understanding of both the May 18 Democratic Uprising and Taiwan’s February 28 Incident, and play a role in promoting the May 18 spirit worldwide.
Programs such as job training courses on the May 18 Democratic Uprising for teachers nationwide, the May 18 Experiential School for 300 students from other regions, and the “Blue Bird” youth promotional group to publicize the values of May 18 both domestically and internationally will also continue.
The “Visiting May 18 Democratic Uprising International Exchange Program” for overseas youth, which started last year and received positive feedback, will continue to offer a variety of activities, including visits to the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery, tours of historic sites, class exchanges with Gwangju students, and campaign activities.
Superintendent Lee Jeongseon stated, “On the 45th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising this year, we will promote various projects to further highlight the values of democracy, human rights, peace, sharing, and community,” and added, “Through May 18 education, we will help our children grow into mature democratic citizens and do our best to spread the spirit of May 18 beyond Korea to the world.”
