"If We Only Unite Among Ourselves, Approval Ratings Won't Surpass 50%"
"We Must Show That We Care for the Nation and People's Livelihood"
"Embrace Others Even If Their Views Differ"
People Power Party lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo voiced that capturing the centrist voters is crucial for rising approval ratings and winning the presidential election.
On the 14th, Ahn appeared on SBS Radio's 'Kim Tae-hyun's Political Show' and said, "Those who dislike Lee Jae-myung becoming president are actually the centrists," adding, "Recent polls show progressives and conservatives each hold 40%, with the remaining 20% being centrists. We must bring them to our side to win."
He stated, "If we only unite among ourselves, it might be comfortable emotionally, but the approval rating won't surpass 50%. If that happens, the 'making Lee Jae-myung president' that our supporters fear the most will accelerate," and added, "We need to show a rational ruling party that cares for the nation and people's livelihood to win the hearts of the centrists." He continued, "Even if their views differ slightly from mine, we must embrace the centrists who dislike Lee Jae-myung becoming president."
Ahn also mentioned the People Power Party's inability to reach a conclusion on the special prosecutor law draft. He said, "Looking on the bright side, such debates are the true nature of a liberal democratic party," and criticized, "It is natural for opinions to clash. On the other hand, is it truly a democratic party like Lee Jae-myung's Democratic Party, where no one can speak up when someone says a word and everyone moves uniformly?" He added, "It is true there is some confusion currently, but the leadership must work harder to persuade. To eliminate legal confusion, there is no other way," and appealed, "I also make an appeal to conservative supporters with strong convictions."
On the same day, the People Power Party announced plans to propose their own 'martial law special prosecutor law.' Floor leader Kwon Seong-dong held a press briefing at the National Assembly, stating, "The People Power Party can never accept the Democratic Party's unconstitutional special prosecutor law on rebellion and foreign exchange that has passed the Legislation and Judiciary Committee," and added, "We will engage in special prosecutor law negotiations with the opposition party at the request of Acting President Choi Sang-mok." He urged, "The Democratic Party must immediately stop plans to process the (rebellion and foreign exchange special prosecutor law) in the plenary session and the unconstitutional presidential arrest agitation, and come to negotiate the special prosecutor law with our party."
