BHI Wins Order for Ammonia Co-Firing Vaporization Facility... "Expanding Lineup"

BH HI announced on the 14th that it has received an order for an ‘ammonia co-firing vaporization facility’ from Samsung C&T. According to the contract, BH HI plans to supply a total of four vaporization facilities (two liquefied ammonia vaporizers and two pressure relief vaporizers) to the Samcheok power complex in Gangwon Province by February next year.

BHI Wins Order for Ammonia Co-Firing Vaporization Facility... "Expanding Lineup"

With this order, BH HI has expanded its product lineup to include vaporizers, essential equipment following the combustors (burners), which are core devices for ammonia co-firing power generation. BH HI is developing its own ammonia co-firing combustor through a national project. Recently, it succeeded in raising the co-firing rate up to 30%, demonstrating its outstanding technological capabilities.

An ammonia vaporizer is a device that converts liquid ammonia into gas and supplies it uniformly to the combustion system. It plays a crucial role in dramatically improving the stability and combustion efficiency of co-firing power generation. Liquefied ammonia has the advantage of being convenient for transport and movement. However, it has the drawback of reduced stability due to difficulties in fuel mixing and dispersion during co-firing.

On the other hand, vaporized ammonia has a relatively faster combustion speed and allows uniform mixing with other fuels, greatly enhancing combustion efficiency. This process requires a high level of heat exchanger design capability and the handling and manufacturing ability of corrosion-resistant materials to prevent damage from the highly toxic and corrosive nature of ammonia.

Ammonia co-firing technology is a method of burning fossil fuels such as coal together with ammonia, a representative carbon-free fuel, to reduce fossil fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. It is attracting global attention as it provides carbon reduction effects while utilizing existing power generation infrastructure.

A BH HI official stated, “Ammonia is gaining attention as a next-generation fuel source because it is easy to store and transport, and production infrastructure is well established worldwide,” adding, “In particular, ammonia co-firing power generation is considered a very important field in the transition to a low-carbon society.”

He continued, “Efficient vaporization of ammonia is a key factor determining the success of co-firing power generation,” and added, “BH HI succeeded in this order because it possesses world-class heat exchanger design and manufacturing capabilities and technological expertise necessary for producing high-quality vaporizers.”
