Doritos Unveils First-Ever Square Chip Design
Fans React Strongly to Potential Change from Iconic Triangle Shape
Company Says Square Chips Will Be Officially Revealed Soon
The global corn chip brand 'Doritos' faced backlash from fans worldwide after posting that the chip shape could change from the traditional triangle to a square.
According to foreign media reports including the Daily Mail on the 12th (local time), Doritos UK recently posted an image of 'square' Doritos chips on their official Instagram. The image included the phrase "The shape of things to come."
The image immediately attracted global attention. Most netizens responded negatively. Comments such as "Is this an outdated April Fool's joke?", "Doritos without triangles is not Doritos," and "Don't mess with my triangles" poured in.
In response to the fans' strong reactions, Doritos stated that they "cannot share specific information about the chip shape yet," but added, "We are glad to see so much interest in our product. Square Doritos is one of the products currently under research and will be officially unveiled at the end of this month."
Doritos is a Mexican-style corn chip launched in 1966 by the American company 'Frito-Lay' under a supply contract with 'Alex Foods.' It has since become one of the most popular snack brands in the U.S., alongside potato chip brands like 'Lay's.' The chips are characterized by their triangular shape and savory seasoning, making them ideal for dipping in salsa, cheese, or guacamole.
Since its launch, Doritos has maintained its triangular shape for about 70 years. However, the brand has recently attempted changes such as introducing new flavors and reducing fat and salt content.
The Daily Mail added, "It is currently unclear whether the square Doritos are targeted only at the UK market or intended for the global market."
Meanwhile, this is not the first time a long-loved processed food brand faced backlash after changing its design. In 2016, the famous Swiss chocolate brand 'Toblerone' introduced a new chocolate bar with fewer of its signature triangular prisms, which sparked strong opposition. Ultimately, Toblerone reverted to its original chocolate bar shape two years later.
