"Strengthening Korea's Mobility Competitiveness"…Korean Academy of Engineering Launches Future Mobility Committee

The National Academy of Engineering of Korea launched the Future Mobility Committee, composed of the country's top experts, on the 13th to strengthen the competitiveness of South Korea's mobility industry.


The launch ceremony, held at El Tower in Yangjae-dong, was conducted in a forum format. The theme of the forum was "Reconstructing Future Mobility: A Paradigm of Innovative and Sustainable Mobility," providing a platform for discussions aimed at sustainable innovation and enhancing global competitiveness in the domestic mobility industry.


The committee chairman is Professor Min Kyung-deok of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Seoul National University, and the committee consists of 10 expert members including Kim Yong-hwa, Advisor at Hyundai Motor Company; Koo Ja-gyeom, CEO of NVH Korea; Sung Young-eun, Professor at Seoul National University’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering; and Cha Doo-won, former CEO of Sonet.


Chairman Min stated, "The launch of this Future Mobility Committee will serve as an important stepping stone for South Korea to leap forward as a leading country in the global mobility industry across technology, industry, and policy." He added, "Through close cooperation among academia, industry, and government, we will contribute to realizing a sustainable future mobility vision."

Kim Yong-hwa, Advisor at Hyundai Motor Company, who delivered the keynote speech, presented on the topic of "Redefining the Concept of Future Mobility." Kim emphasized, "The social role of mobility is changing, and the mobility industry itself is shifting towards a consumer-driven model."


He continued, "How we overcome the obstacles that arise in developing and applying future mobility to our society will be the starting point for technological innovation," adding, "Now, we need to broaden our perspective from the viewpoint of consumers, markets, and society rather than just technology or developers."


Following the keynote speech, panel presentations and discussions featured Kim Chang-hwan, Vice President in charge of Electrification Energy Solutions at Hyundai Motor Company; Jang Sung-wook, Vice President of Kakao Mobility; Choi Kang-rim, Head of KT telecop Enterprise Business Division; and Cha Doo-won, former CEO of Sonet.


Vice President Kim highlighted South Korea’s competitiveness as a global battery manufacturing powerhouse and stressed the need to focus on developing batteries that satisfy not only new materials but also price, performance, and durability. He said, "Hyundai Motor Company played a significant role in LG Energy Solution becoming a leading battery company worldwide," adding, "Presenting challenges and jointly driving development capabilities is what the three domestic battery companies and Hyundai Motor Company must do together."


Yoon Ui-jun, President of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, said, "We hope this committee launch will serve as a catalyst to strengthen the global competitiveness of South Korea’s mobility industry," and added, "The Academy will continue to provide unwavering support in solving policy and technological challenges."
