Gijang-gun to Create 'Climate-Responsive Urban Forest' Around Ilgwang Amusement Park This Year

A 1-Hectare Climate-Responsive Urban Forest
Aiming for Carbon Neutrality and Fine Dust Reduction

Busan Gijang-gun will create a climate-responsive urban forest this year, focusing on the area around Ilgwang Amusement Park Baseball Theme Park (Cheonggwang-ri, Ilgwang-eup).

This project is part of the Korea Forest Service's national subsidy program, aiming to expand green spaces in urban areas and achieve carbon neutrality and fine dust reduction. A total of 500 million KRW from national funds and 500 million KRW from city and county funds will be invested.

The county plans to establish a 1-hectare climate-responsive urban forest by planting trees that can block fine dust and lower urban temperatures in the designated green area.

In January, a detailed design service will be commissioned, followed by a review by the Urban Forest Creation and Management Committee in March. The design service will be completed in April, with construction beginning in May and the project expected to be completed by July.

The county expects the newly created urban forest to provide a pleasant environment for local residents and play an important role in actively responding to climate change. In particular, it is anticipated to significantly contribute to reducing greenhouse gases as a carbon sink in the city and improve air quality by blocking fine dust.

County Governor Jeong Jong-bok said, "I hope this climate-responsive urban forest creation project will not only provide a comfortable environment for residents but also serve as an opportunity to proactively respond to climate change," adding, "We will continue to promote various projects to improve the environment and enhance residents' quality of life."

Last year, the county successfully completed the 'Climate-Responsive Urban Forest Creation Project' around Osiria Waterfront Park, and based on this experience, plans to proceed smoothly with this year's project. Furthermore, the county intends to continuously expand climate-responsive urban forest projects within the region to solve local environmental issues and promote sustainable development.
